The entrance is at 1500 meters above the sea on the Redondo mount, in front of the town of Gromo on the street that leads to the hamlet called Boario Spiazzi, an hour’s walk. The name Tacol is derived from the sound of the mountain sparrow (Gracchio Corallino- in the bergamask language;” tacol”) which makes its nest inside the cave’s entrance.
There are several obstacles to face for a speleologist or potholer : total darkness, 100% humidity, the continuous dripping of water from the ceiling, a constant temperature of 10 degrees, all of which are present along the one ascending/descending route. Moderate climbing is required in certain parts as well as crawling, and climbing sections of different lengths: 8,10,12,and 17 meters long. If you pick the easiest path to the "green lake" it’s a 600 meter long route with a height difference of 182 meters, the time required to cover the distance is between 5 and 7 hours.
